Certified origin and traceability: the future of nuts
In 2025, Europe raises the bar for food transparency: with the entry into force of the new EU Regulation 2429/2023, origin labeling becomes mandatory for nuts. This measure aims to provide consumers with clear information about product provenance, promote certified supply chains, and counter unfair competition.
For Alfrus, an Apulian company specialized in almond processing, this change represents the natural evolution of a path already undertaken: building a safe, transparent, and fully traceable supply chain.
The new regulation requires that the country of origin of the raw material must be clearly visible on the label or packaging, with greater prominence than the place of processing or packaging.
Italy, one of the world’s leading importers of nuts, finds itself in the middle of a system that demands rigor, quality, and responsibility. The answer lies in one key word: traceability, which is not just a matter of control but represents a fundamental aspect of food safety.
At Alfrus, we have already launched a major internal digitization process, investing in innovative tools such as an integrated MES, an advanced software system that allows real-time monitoring of every stage of almond processing: from reception to transformation and packaging, connecting management and production data.
This system enables the collection of detailed information about raw material origin, logistics management, production cycles and machinery used, results of biochemical and physical tests, waste management, and the product’s final destination. A comprehensive mapping designed to ensure quality, food safety, and sustainability.
The next goal? Extending traceability beyond internal operations. We are actively developing a shared information ecosystem inspired by technologies such as blockchain, capable of collecting and sharing data provided by all actors involved in almond production: from agronomic practices to harvesting methods, from quality parameters to the organoleptic profile of each individual batch.
It’s an ambitious challenge, aiming to build a network of certified, reliable and accessible data, which requires the active collaboration of carefully selected, qualified suppliers able to ensure a consistent and verifiable flow of information.
Today, trust is built on data. And the new European regulation becomes a real opportunity to strengthen an already active vision and deepen the bond between consumer and product, through certified origin, proven quality and total traceability.
In a market increasingly focused on transparency and sustainability, at Alfrus we choose to stay true to our values while accelerating the evolution towards an interconnected, responsible and forward-looking supply chain, continuing to deliver premium, fully traceable almonds to the market.
